Abstract

The transfer of pigments from aqueous to organic vehicles is promoted by the application of certain cationic surface-acting compounds, all of which have an aliphatic group of 8 or more carbon atoms attached to the positive radical of the compound. The said compounds are: (1) aliphatic quaternary ammonium or phosphonium hydroxides and water-soluble salts thereof; (2) water-soluble ternary sulphonium salts; (3) betaines; (4) inorganic acid salts of primary, secondary, or tertiary amines; (5) primary, secondary, or tertiary amines rendered water-soluble by the introduction of hydroxy or carboxyl groups other than by salt-formation with fatty or resin acids. Numerous examples of these classes are specified. The substances are added to the pigments in small proportions at any stage after precipitation and before drying. According to a typical example, 10 lb. of chrome orange pigment consisting essentially of basic lead chromate in the form of a washed press cake is mixed with 1 lb. of mineral spirits and 0,05 lb. of hexadecyl pyridinium bromide in the form of 10 per cent aqueous solution is added. The pigment is immediately transferred to the mineral spirits with liberation of water. In another example, a copper phthalocyanine pigment prepared according to Specification 410,814 is similarly treated.
