Abstract

A small proportion of a dispersion stabilizer is added to the solution in the manufacture of monovinylacetylene by passing acetylene through an aqueous acid solution containing, besides a cuprous salt, a salt of ammonia or of a tertiary amine and/or a salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or a metal of the third periodic group, including the rare earth metals. The proportion of dispersion stabilizer generally lies between a few parts per thousand and a few per cent, calculated on the whole solution. Specified dispersion stabilizers are vegetable mucilages, water - soluble gums, agar - agar, pectins, aliphatic sulphonic acids of high molecular weight, such as the condensation products of fatty acids with hydroxyalkyl or aminoalkyl sulphonic acids, sulphuric esters of higher alcohols or of hydroxyalkylamides, alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids, condensation products of ethylene oxide with organic compounds containing hydroxy, carboxylic or amino groups, condensation products of fatty acids with lysalbic acid, protalbic acid or other albumen degradation products, sulphite cellulose waste liquor, and phosphatides such as lecithin. In the examples, monovinylacetylene is produced by leading acetylene through an aqueous mixture containing cuprous chloride, ammonium chloride, copper powder and (1) a condensation product from stearic acid and hydroxyethanesulphonic acid, (2) sodium butylnaphthalenesulphonate, and (3) linseed mucilage.
