Abstract
442,839. Reciprocating pumps and compressors. GRIMOD, Y. A., 55, Rue de la Convention, and PRECISION MECANIQUE, 11, Rue Vergniaud, both in Paris. May 9, 1934, No. 14069. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 19, 1934]. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] A reciprocating pump suitable for liquid or gaseous fuels comprises plungers a, c between which is a body of liquid, e.g. lubricating oil. This liquid is drawn through the port a<3> and during the upward stroke of the plunger a an inclined edge a<1> closes the port a<3> and motion is transmitted to the plunger c. A groove a<0> opens the port a<3> and the plunger c is returned by the spring h. Fuel or gas is pumped by the plunger c, f being the suction port and g the delivery valve. The amount of fuel or gas delivered may also be controlled by a port c<10> co-operating with the port f or alternatively a similar port may be arranged at the other end of the plunger c to release the pressure of the liquid at the end of the stroke. The piston c may consist of two parts separated by a spring; delivery is then delayed until abutment of the two parts. A spring loaded accumulator piston may be connected to the liquid space, or the fuel or gas space. Air in the liquid space may be removed by the co-operation of the grooves l<1>, l<2> and the release port m. The relative areas of the plungers a, c may be varied. Arrangements may be provided in a number of pumps each supplying an engine cylinder whereby at low loads a certain proportion may cease delivery. This may be effected by providing a throttle passage connected to the liquid space or providing some of the inclined edges a<1> with vertical steps. The piston c may be omitted and mercury employed as the medium between the plunger a and the fuel or gas. Fig. 14 shows the fuel or gas suction taking place through a port q, in the plunger a, and pipe f. The liquid space is connected by pipes a<3>, a<5> to the supply tank b and the lower end of the plunger c and the upper end of the plunger a are inclined and both are rotatable by racks h<1>. The plunger a co-operates with the port a<2> to determine the beginning of delivery and the plunger c cooperates with the port a<4> to determine the end of delivery. Both plungers are lubricated by ports q<2> and grooves q3.
