Abstract

Cable-impregnating compositions are made by dissolving a synthetic resin in a volatile solvent, incorporating the solution in mineral oil and completely evaporating the solvent at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C., e.g. by vacuum distillation. Suitable solvents are petroleum spirit free from aromatics and having a final boiling point of 100 DEG C., and trichlorethylene. The resin solution may be purified before or after addition to the oil by settling and decantation, filtering, or treatment with decolourizing earth or carbon. The resin is dissolved in the solvent preferably under conditions which cause separation of impurities. p ALSO:Cable impregnating compositions are made by dissolving natural or synthetic resins, e.g. rosin in a volatile solvent, incorporating the solution in mineral oil and completely evaporating the solvent at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. e.g. by vacuum distillation. Suitable solvents are petroleum spirit free from aromatics and having a final boiling point of 100 DEG C., and trichlorethylene. The resin solution may be purified before or after addition to the oil by settling and decantation, filtering, or treatment with decolourizing earth or carbon. The resin is dissolved in the solvent preferably under conditions which cause separation of impurities, e.g. by allowing oxidized bodies to remain undissolved.
