[Class 64 (i)] Hot smokeless air for drying ceramic ware &c. is obtained by passing flue gases from a furnace a alternately up and down through a series of shafts c, d, f, the first c, d of which are narrower than the rest and extend through a chamber r through which a fan k draws air from a bank of metal pipes y extending across the wider shafts f. The shafts c, d are made of fireclay and are covered with iron plates m, n connected in a gasproof manner with a flanged iron plate o through which the air pipes y protrude. Fresh air may be added by an adjustable channel p to the flue gases, the speed of which may be regulated by a fan g.
