Abstract

[Class 94 (i)] In order to compress packets of flour and the like to a uniform shape, they are subjected to a gradually increasing constriction during travel through the apparatus. In the form shown in plan in Fig. 2, two flat chain link belts 21, 22 travel continuously or intermittently, and receive between them a succession of packets 23, which are gradually, compressed owing to the gradually decreasing space between the belts. Flat or curved lower and upper plates 24, 25, Fig. 5, may be provided and may taper from plane to curved surfaces or vice versa. Plates 43 press the chain links against the package, and may be adjustably or resiliently mounted. In a modification, belts are used to effect the compression and are held in position by rollers. In another form, Fig. 12, belts 46, 47 engage the tops and bottoms of the packets and plates 44, 45, which are arranged to present a converging passage, are opened and closed by a cam 50. In further modifications, top and bottom plates without belts may be used, or one belt and one plate, or three belts and one plate, or four belts.
