Convention date, May 16, 1934. [Class 55 (ii)] The viscosity of tars is increased by heating during or after distillation with less than 5 per cent of an organic nitro- or nitroso-compound. The compound is added in some examples before distillation of the tar and in others to distilled tars in which cases the mixture is stirred for 24 hours in a reflux apparatus at 110-120‹ C. Nitro-phenol, nitroso-phenol, nitro-naphthalene, dinitro-naphthalene, dinitro-toluene, dinitrobenzene, picric acid, nitroso-dimethyl-aniline, orthonitrochlorobenzene, in amounts of 1 or 2 per cent are referred to.
