Abstract

439,957. Discharge devices. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. June 14, 1934, No. 17652. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1933. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 15, 1934.] [Class 39 (i)] An arc in a gas- or vapour-filled discharge device is extinguished by means of a number of control grids to which a negative potential is applied, the distance between the grids being equal to, or less than, the mesh width, or the distance between adjacent bars of each grid, and is also smaller than the length of the mean free path of the ions to ensure that the layers of ions around the grids overlap. The grids may consist of rods, wires or plates of round or oblong cross-section. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the grid 5, Fig. 3 (Cancelled), nearest the cathode may be heated by means of the discharge, or the cathode or by a member 6 connected to a source of continuous- or alternating-current and is coated with alkaline earth metal. A discharge between the grid 5 and the anode 2 may be prevented by means of a negative potential applied to the grid 4 through a potentiometer 8, a separate battery, or through a resistance through which flows the grid current. The heated grid may consist of a plate provided with rectangular apertures across which are stretched heating wires. The control potential may be applied between the cathode and a tapping on the potentiometer 8. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
