Abstract

439,438. Control of motors. RAMSDEN, H. K., 26, Ashlands, Ashton-on-Mersey, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Sept. 18, 1934, No. 26833. [Class 38 (iii)] A change-over switch RS is adapted to connect a trolley-bus motor A either to the trolley wire or to a battery B1, B2, carried on the vehicle, and means are provided whereby the connections between the change-over switch and the trolley wire may be established only when the change-over switch is in the trolleywire position, a battery switch BS also being provided which can be operated to connect the battery to the change-over switch only when the change-over switch is in a battery connecting position. Thus, when the motor is supplied from the trolley the battery is separated from the motor circuit at each pole by the open contacts of two switches in series. The change-over switch RS may be constituted by the reversing switch modified to have forward and reverse positions both for trolley and battery connections. The reversing and battery switches may be operated by a common removable handle which cannot be removed from the reversing switch when the latter occupies a trolley position, and can only be removed from the battery switch when the battery is disconnected from the motor circuit. The circuit from the trolley to the reversing switch may pass through contactors LS1, LS2, controlled by a relay de-energized when the master controller is in an off position.. The master controller is then interlocked with the reversing switch so that it can be moved from the off position only when the reversing switch is in a trolley position, and movement of the reversing switch is possible only when the master controller is in the off position. The battery sections B1, B2 may be connected in series for supplying the motors, and when the switch BS disconnects them from the motor circuit it may connect them in parallel for charging from a generator G. The battery disconnecting switches may consist of contactors electrically interlocked to be de-energized when the line contactors are closed. When the motor is supplied from the battery it is controlled simply by a contactor FS controlled by a foot operated switch FR.
