Abstract

460,846. Substituting sources in service; transmitting mechanical power. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. and CROFT, E. H. July 2, 1935, No. 18899. [Class 38 (iv)] An electrically propelled battery, vehicle is driven by a motor 1 normally supplied from a battery 3 carried on the vehicle and is provided with collector devices 4, 5, whereby the battery - and motor may be fed from a live rail or conductor arranged along parts of the route e.g. adjacent a station. The motor 1 is fed by the battery 3 until the devices 4, 5, contact the live conductor when relay 16 is energized opening contacts 14 and de-energizing relays 7-10 to cause opening of motoring contactors M1, M2 and resistance contactors 11, 12. Opening of M1 and energization of 16 cause closure of contacts 27, 28 so that relays 25, 26 are energized and cause closure of charging contactors C1, C2 connecting battery 3 to the supply. Closure of contactor C1 causes closure of contacts 15, re-energization of relays 7 and 8 to close motoring contactors M1, M2, resistance contactors 11, 12 subsequently closing in sequence under control of a current limit relay 17c which controls contacts 17. Closure of C1 also causes closure of contacts 38 and energization of relay 32 which closes maintaining contacts 33 and opens contacts 34 to de-energize relay 16 which then closes contacts 14. If the charging current falls below a predetermined value relay 24 opens maintaining contacts 30 and since contacts 27, 28 are open relays 25, 26 are de-energized and charging contactors C 1, C2 open, the motor circuit being unaffected so that the motor is still supplied by the battery. A switch 35 is provided whereby reconnection of the battery to the line may be effected manually opening and closing of the contactors M1, M2 and 11 and 12 taking place respectively before and after closure of the charging contactors The connection and reconnection of the battery to the line may be controlled by a voltage balance relay or the relay 24 may be a reverse current relay or alternatively a separate reverse current relay may be provided. Suitable charging control means may be provided and the relay 32 may have two positions in the low voltage position preventing connection of the battery to the line once it is disconnected and in the normal voltage position effecting reconnection of the battery to the line. In the arrangement above described alternatively or in addition the motor may be provided with shunt excitation which is increased above normal on connection of the battery to the line.
