Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 29, 1934]. [Class 39 (i)] A method of making a cathode consists in starting with a compound of a refractory metal and an alkaline or rare earth metal and treating the compound in a reducing atmosphere to reduce it to the refractory metal and an oxide of the alkaline or rare earth metal. The compound may be barium tungstate, molybdate or rhenate, or bariumnickel cyanite or other barium-nickel double salt. It is placed upon a foundation metal, tungsten, molybdenum, rhenium or nickel respectively, reduced in a stream of hydrogen and sintered. Or a mixture of materials, e.g. 90 per cent barium tungstate and 10 per cent calcium tungstate may be used. Kaolin or aluminium oxide may be added if desired. In another example, thorium and cerium tungstates are used in such proportion that the resulting thorium oxide and cerium oxide are in the ratio 99.1 to 0.09. If filaments are made of the material powdered refractory metal may be added to increase the conductivity
