Abstract

438,152. Boat-propulsion apparatus. GARDNER, R., Ellerbeck, Worsley Road, and STABLEFORD, E. O., Fairlea, Lower Church Road, both in Gurnard, Cowes, Isle of Wight. July 20, 1934, No. 21254. [Class 114] Boat-propulsion apparatus comprises a wind motor operatively connected by a transmission system with the propelling means and a manually operable spring motor is incorporated therein. A base 2 carried by floats 1 supports a column 3 on which is mounted a wind motor 5. A transmission system including bevelled gearing and shafts connects the wind motor to a horizontal shaft 10 carrying paddle wheels 11. Column 3 may be rotated by a belt and pulley gearing for setting the motor into the wind. On the shaft 10 is mounted a spring motor 16 with pawl control whereby wind power may be replaced or supplemented by manual operation of the pulley 14 of the spring motor. A brake or clutch may be provided for the wind motor and also a guard for the vanes thereof.
