Abstract

437,465. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. SHORT, H. O., and GOUGE, A., Seaplane Works, Rochester, Kent. June 28, 1934, No. 19101. [Class 108 (iii)] [See also Group XXXIII] A dashpot or equivalent frictional connection is interposed between a seaplane wing and a wing tip float in order to absorb oscillations occurring in the wing and float and thus to prevent the wing and float from oscillating together as a unit. Swinging movements of the float are controlled by a dashpot contained in a telescopic diagonal strut comprising a tube 15 carrying an oil cylinder 81 which is a sliding fit within a tube 16 which carries a piston rod 19 passing through stuffing boxes on plugs fitted at either end of cylinder 18. A perforated piston 20 is mounted on rod 19 substantially midway of cylinder 18 and provides an abutment for coiled springs 23, 123. The outer end of spring 123 abuts against a thrust bearing 27 carried by cylinder closing plug 29. Cylinder 18 is filled with oil through an aperture normally closed by a screw 40, a second screw serving to close an air vent. Expansion of the strut is limited by a stop 31 carried by piston rod 19 and contraction by the opposed ends of cylinders 15, 16.
