Abstract

502,705. Shock - absorbers ; rectilinear - motion bearings. RIBBESFORD CO., Ltd., ONIONS, J. H., and THORNHILL, P. W. Nov. 4,1937, No. 30301. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A shock-absorber comprising a pair of tele scopically movable tubular members have rigid metal anti-friction rollers arranged between them, the rollers are not pivoted and roll on both surfaces rectilinearly with respect to the members whereby the rollers move one halt the distance moved by one member relative to the other. As shown, an oleo-strut comprises telescopic members 10, 11 and a floating piston 21 below which is an air chamber 22 filled with compressed air through a nozzle 23. The end of the member 11 is formed by a piston 14 containing a valve 17 which closes ports 19 as the strut is compressed whereby liquid in chamber 25 passes under the piston through throttling orifice 20. On extension of the strut, the valve 17 moves away from its seating and liquid returns through orifice 26 in the valve and ports 19 in the piston. The member 10 slides over the member 11 by rollers 27 free to roll on both members so that the axial distance moved by the rollers is one half the total distance moved by the strut. The 'rollers may be housed in a cage 28. The rollers may run on flat or curved flutes formed, on the opposed surfaces of the members 10, 11 or the flutes may be formed on a sleeve 32 inserted in the member 10. The rollers may be tubular or be of barrel-shape or as stated in the Provisional Specification may be waisted and the cylindrical rollers -may act after the manner of a needle roller. Specification 479,533, [Group XXXIV], is referred to.
