Abstract

436,684. Stop valves. COCKBURNS, Ltd., and MAcNICOLL, D., Clydesdale Engineering Works, Cardonald, Renfrewshire. Aug. 1, 1934, No. 22409. [Class 135] A stop valve comprises a valve element 1 between an upstream valve seat 2 and a downstream valve seat 3 which is permanently constrained towards the seating 2 by a spring 5 acting through a lever 6, spindle 7 and fork 8, the valve being opened by the fluid pressure on the upstream side acting against this spring. An emergency trip device is provided comprising a strong stressed spring 14 acting on a lever 15, which is normally retained by a catch 16, to pull the valve 1 over on to its downstream seat 3, against the resistance of the spring 5 when the catch is released. A slot and pin engagement 17, 18 is provided between the levers 15 and 6 to allow free operation of the valve without disturbing the emergency trip. The valve 1 can be positively seated on the seat 2 and the emergency trip reset by a spindle 10 which for normal operation is withdrawn. The valve also acts as a safety cut-off since if the pressure on the downstream side falls appreciably the valve 1 is closed on to its seating 3 by the fluid pressure alone.
