Abstract

Gelatines from various sources, e.g. bones, calves' heads, skins or tendons, are treated, particularly for photographic purposes, to remove anti-ripening bodies, which are stated to be non-glutinous albuminous substances, with active carbon, silicic acid, or other adsorptive substances, or with dicalcium phosphate, followed by treatment with hydrogen peroxide for several hours, the hydrogen peroxide being rendered inactive with sulphur dioxide. An inert basic gelatine capable of extreme ripening is obtained, to which any desired amount of the extracted anti-ripening bodies or artificial bodies having the same effect may be added, together with sensitizers, e.g. cystin or arsenobenzenes, if desired. The anti-ripening bodies are recovered by treating the extracting agents with alkalis, and then neutralizing, e.g. with a suitable acid, e.g. nitric acid, which is employed in slight excess, followed by rapid concentration, preferably in vacuo. According to an example, 100 kg. gelatine in a 5-10 per cent solution is treated at 60 DEG C. with 15-40 kg. of active carbon. After one hour, the carbon is filtered off and treated with N/10 caustic soda solution at 20-30 DEG C. The solution is then made slightly acid with ZN nitric acid and rapidly concentrated, and then added as desired to the basic gelatine.
