Convention date, June 16. [Class 106 (ii)] [See also Group VIII] A method of testing the quality of yarn fed intermittently to a machine consists in temporarily imposing an additional twist to it, so as to present to the measuring instrument a distortion-resisting length of yarn of substantially circular cross-section. The invention is described in connection with a knitting machine but is applicable to other machines wherein the feed of yarn or cordage is intermittent. A bracket 14, adjustable on a standard 10 carries two upstanding members 17, 18 a length of yarn lying between which is clamped. After being twisted by rotation of the clamp on the member 18 the yarn is gauged between these points, untwisted and released for utilization in the machine. The member 18 functions as a bearing for the twisting head 28 and also as a backing member for a rack 19 operated from the " 104 gear " shaft 52. The rack acts upon a pinion 30 fixed to the head 28 to rotate it and the clamp 20<1>, 211. There is a similar but non-rotary clamp 20, 21 on the member 17. A rod 33 controlled by cams on the shaft 52 and carrying a cross-head 36 keeps the pivoted portions 21, 21<1> of the clamps open while yarn is passing. A similar rod 40 lowers, at controlled intervals, a measuring plunger 41 on to the yarn, which is supported during measurement.
