This invention relates to machines for twisting and winding yarn, roving, sliver and the like, and it has particular reference to a device for controlling the twist which is put into the length of yarn extending between the delivery rolls and the twisting and winding device in such a way that the twist may .be placed in the yarn uniformly throughout said length or may be placed to a greater extent in one end of said length than in the other end thereof.
In the ordinary twisting and winding apparatus which employs a twisting and winding device and delivery rolls for delivering the yarn, roving or sliver thereto, the twist which is put into the yarn is uniformly distributed between the twisting and winding head and the delivery rolls, the whole of this length of yarn being subjected to the same twisting action. Under some circumstances it is desirable that a greater portion of this twist should be put into the yarn at one end or the other of the length of yarn extending between the winding and twisting head and the delivery rolls and the appara tus herein shown provides means whereby this may be done. Then again in twisting some yarn, especially woolen yarn it is desirable that the first operation to which the sliver is subjected as it is delivered from the delivery rolls should be a slight twisting action together with a drawing action and that thereafter the slightly twisted and drawn sliver should be twisted without any drawing action and then wound on the yarn mass.
This operation has heretofore been carried out with spinning mules, these being constructed so that during one stage of the operation the sliver is drawn and twisted slightly and during the next stage the slight- 1y twisted sliver is given its complete twist and wound onto the bobbin.
The invention forming the subject of the present application provides means whereby this operation of drawing the sliver and slightly twisting it and then subsequently firmly twisting the partially twisted sliver without d rawing it can be accomplished simultaneously and continuously. This is done by employing a twist-controlling device which acts on the yarn between the de livery rolls and the twisting and winding device and which functions to distribute the total twist which is given to the yarn by the twisting and winding device so that a small per cent of the twist will be placed in the portion of the yarn between the controlling device and the delivery rolls and the rest of the twist will be placed in the yarn between the controlling device and the twisting device.
In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings some selected embodiments thereof which will now be described after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.

I have chosen herein to illustrate my invention as it might be applied in a winding and twisting machine of the type shown in my Patent No. 1,258,412. This type of winding and twisting apparatus is designed to lay the yarn in a rotating yarn receiverin loops which form layers extending transversely to the axis of rotation of the yarn receiver.
In the drawings the yarn receiver is indicated at 1 and 2 indicates the yarn mass therein. The yarn is held in the yarn mass by means of a winding head 3 all as shown in the above-mentioned patent, said winding head comprising the slotted winding plate 4 which rests on the yarn mass 2, the yarnlaying arm 5 traversing the yarn back and forth in the slot of the winding plate and suitable gearing for rotating the yarn receiver and the winding head at difl'i'erent relative speeds and also for oscillating the yarn-laying arm.
In the construction herein shown the yarn receiver is secured to a housing 6 in which the winding head is located and said housing has a hollow spindle 7 rising therefrom and through which the yarn 8 is delivered, said spindle having the gear 9 thereon by which it is driven. The winding head and the cam are in turn driven from gears 10 and 11 which are loosely mounted on the spindle 7. 1 These gears 9, 10 and 11 are driven from other gears 12, 13 and 14.
The gear 12 is driven from a shaft 31 through suitable bevelled gears 32, 31 being the main driving shaft of the machine. The gear 13 is driven from a shaft 38 through the spiral gears 84 and the gear 14 is driven from a shaft 35 through the bevelled gears 36, the shafts 33 and 35 being in turn driven from the shaft 31 through suitable gearing and this system of gearing operating to retate the yarn receiver 1 and the winding head 3 relative to each other and also operating'to give the yarn-laying arm 5 its 7 traversing movement.

15 indicate delivery rolls by which the yarn, sliver or roving is delivered to the twisting and winding device and as said twisting and winding device is operated the yarn 8 will be twisted between the latter and the delivery rolls and at the same time will be wound onto r the yarn mass 2. If the rate at which it is wound is greater than the rate at which it is delivered from the delivery rolls 15 there will be in addition a drawing action as will be obvious.
The parts thus far described are or may be all as usual in devices of this sort and form no part of the present invention, which relates to a twist-controlling device situated to act on the yarn between the twisting and winding mechanism and the delivery rolls and functioning to control the manner in which the twist is distributed throughout the length of yarn between the delivery rolls andthe twisting and winding apparatus. This twist controller comprises a rotatable member having engagement with the yarn andmeans for rotating said twist controller. The relation between the speed of rotation of the twist controller and that of the twisting and winding apparatus determines what portion of the twist will be put into the yarn between the twisting and winding apparatus and the twist controller and what portion between the latterand the delivery rolls;
The twist controller herein illustrated, and which l regard as a practical one, comprisesa sleeve 16 rotatably mounted in suitable bearings 17 and having at one end an extension 18 which is situated at one side of the axial line of the sleeve 16 and is provided with a laterall -extending arm 19 provided at its end with a head 20 extending The end of the extension 18 is formedwith a laterally-extending flange 21 having a guide eye 22 therethrough situated in linewith the axis of the sleeve 16. 7
The .two parts 16 and 21 constitute two concentricportions each provided with an axial bore through which the yarn extends and the part 18 which connects these concentric portions is situated entirely on one side of the axial line of the controller and is, therefore, eccentrieally located.
Means are provided for rotating the sleeve 16 with its extension 18 and while any mechanism for this purpose may be employed I have herein shown the sleeve 16 as provided with a spiral gear 23 wlnch meshes with and is driven by a spiral gear 24; on a shaft 25.
The shaft 25 may be driven in any suitable way but preferably will be driven from the driving shaft 31 by means of change gearing so constructed that the speed of rotation of the shaft 25 may be varied. relative to that of the shaft 31. A change gearing accomplishing this end is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5. The shaft. 25 has splincd thereto but removably mounted thereon a change gear 40 which is connected to the shaft 231 through a train of gears 41, -12, -18. The gear :1 is carried by a swinging arm 1-11: pivoted co-axially with the gear 42. The yarn or roving 8 passes from the dclivery rolls 15 tl'irough the sleeve 16 and thence around the head 20, thence through the eye 22 and to the twisting and winding device.
The operation of the devi e will be cvidcnt from the foregoing and is as follows. As the twisting and winding device rotates it will place twist in the portion of the yarn 8 extending from the twisting and winding device to the point where the yarn is held in. engagement with the head 20 and if it be assumed that the sleeve 16 and head 20 are stationary then all of the twist which it put into the yarn will be placed in the portion 5%. thereof between the twisting and winding device and. the twist controller, while the portion 55 between the twist controller and the delivery rolls will receive no twist. ()n the other hand, it the sleeve 16 is rotated at the same speed as the winding and twisting apparatus then all. of the twist will be put into the portion of the yarn. 1, however, the sleeve 16 is rotated at a less speed than the twisting and winding device then a certain percentage of the total twist will be put into the portion 55 of the yarn and the rest of the twist will be put into the portion 5a. of the yarn. The relative amount of the twist-which is put into the portions 52L lllll and 55 of the yarn depends upon the relation between speed of rotation of the sleeve 16 and that of the twisting and winding de vice, so that by varying the speed of rotation of the sleeve 16 the distribution of the twist in the length of the yarn between the winding and twisting head and the delivery rolls can be controlled.
The invention has various useful applications. In the making of woolen yarn for instance it is highly desirable that the roving or sliver be slightly twisted as it is drawn and that thereafter the slightly twisted and drawn sliver should be twisted sufficiently to produce yarn of the desired texture without, however, d "awing it. The device herein shown is capable of performing these functions continuously and without interruption, for if the sleeve 16 and its extension 18 is rotated slowly with relation to the rotation of the twisting and winding apparat-us then there will be a slight twist put into the portion 55 of the yarn and a much greater twist put into the portion 5a of the yarn. The winding and twisting apparatus can be so designed that it will wind the yarn faster than it is delivered from the roll 15, in which case there will be a drawing action involved. The twist-controlling device may be arranged so that this drawing action will occur between it and the delivery rolls so that the portion 55 of the yarn may be slightly twisted as it is drawn while the portion 54 of the yarn is not drawn at all. but
twisted to the full extent. Thus the apparatus will operate to perform continuously the two steps of slightly drawing and twisting the roving as it is delivered from the delivery rolls and then completing the twisting and winding the twisted yarn onto the yarn mass.
Another way in which the invention may be used is as illustrated in Fig. 4 wherein the winding and twisting apparatus is so situated with reference to the delivery rolls that the length of yarn makes a bend or turn. in such case if the yarn at the bend or turn is supported by a stationary support the twist would be put into the yarn entirely between said support and the winding and twisting apparatus but by placing the twist-controlling device at this bend. and giving it a proper speed of rotation the twist may be evenly distributed throughout the length of yarn extending liietween the winding and twisting apparatus and the delivery rolls.
ll claim:
1. In a machine for twisting and winding yarn, the combination with delivery rolls, of a rotary twisting and winding device and a driving shaft therefor, a rotary twist controller acting on the yarn betweentlie delivery rolls and twisting and winding device and controlling the relative amounts of twist put into the yarn before and after it is acted upon by the twist controller, and gearing connecting said driving shaft to the twist controller.
2. In a machine for twisting and winding yarn, the combination with delivery rolls, of a rotary twisting and Winding device and a driving shaft therefor, a rotary twist controller acting on the yarn between the delivery rolls and twisting and winding device and controlling the relative amounts of twist put into the yarn before and after it is acted upon by the twist controller, and a train of gearii'ig including a change gear connecting the driving shaft to the twist c011- troller.
