Abstract

Hormones of the anterior lobe of the pituitary, obtained from the gland itself or from urine, blood or placenta, are separated into a hormone A influencing the ripening of the follicles and a hormone B influencing the development of the corpora lutea, by adding picric acid to an aqueous solution of the preparation to precipitate hormone B, leaving hormone A in solution. The precipitate is separated and dissolved in acetic or hydrochloric acid, free picric acid is removed by means of ether or a similar solvent, and the aqueous solution of hormone B so obtained is evaporated to dryness.ALSO:Hormones of the anterior lobe of the pituitary obtained from the gland itself or from urine, blood, or placenta, are separated into a hormone A influencing the ripening of the follicles and a hormone B influencing the development of the corpora lutea, by adding picric acid to an aqueous solution of the preparation to precipitate hormone B, leaving hormone A in solution. The precipitate is separated and dissolved in acetic or hydrochloric acid, free picric acid is removed by means of ether or a similar solvent, and the aqueous solution so obtained is evaporated to dryness. The filtrate from the picric acid precipitate is either treated with solvents to remove picric acid and evaporated in vacuo to yield hormone A, or the hormone may be precipitated by addition of alcohol without previous removal of the picric acid. It is stated that precipitants other than picric acid may be employed, but no other substance is specified.
