Abstract

435,257. Expanding - - pulley gearing. LINDSAY, H., 47, Queen's Road, Bradford, Yorkshire. Feb. 16, 1935, No. 5114/34. [Class 80 (ii)] Expanding V-belt pulley gearing is rendered automatic by centrifugal weights 5 assisted by springs 10. The pulley shown has one movable flange 2 which is closed towards the fixed flange 1 by the heels of levers 6 which carry the weights 5. The levers 6 are supported on pivots 7 turning with the pulley. A form is described in which the levers 6 are pivoted upon the movable flange and abut against a non-yielding part. In Fig. 4, the improved pulley 2 is shown supported along with a driving electric motor M on a platform P turning about a fixed pivot 16 against a spring 17. The tension of the belt 9, which drives on to a flat pulley 14, increases with the speed. Consequently an arm 17x of the platform P rises as the speed increases. A stop 18 limits the rise of the arm 17x and the maximum speed of the automatic gearing is controlled by adjusting the stop 18 by means of a screw 19 and hand wheel 22. The spring 17 may be omitted, and all speeds may be effected positively by fitting a nut on the arm 17x engaged by the manual screw 19.
