Abstract
539,199. Skiving-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., POTTER, S. W., and PERKINS, J. H. Feb. 29, 1940, No. 3760. [Class 31 (i)] Relates to machines of the kind described in Specifications 278,769 and 318,290, [both in Class 31 (i)], and consists in detail improvements. Part of the machine carrying the knife and feed roll is pivoted to part of the machine carrying the driving shaft, so that the first part may be released and swung upwardly for inspection. The feed roll is carried by a cover movable to expose the knife, and this cover and a cover over the driving belt for the feed roll are locked when the machine is in operation. The feed roll is yieldingly mounted to tilt lengthwise and also bodily away from the knife, both movements against successively a weak and a strong spring. The part of the machine carrying the driving shaft 31 is secured to the bench. A frame 1 is pivoted to this at 35, which frame may be released and raised to expose the knife 3. The machine is stopped and started by a handle 83 actuating a belt shifter 89 connected by a lever 95 and link 99 with a safety lever 103. A hinged cover 79 supporting the feed roll has a lug 111 co-operating with an arc-shaped portion 109 of the lever. Also, a lug 113 carried by a cover 75 for the belt and two speed pulleys co-operates with an arm 101 of the lever. The arrangement is that when the driving belt is on the fast pulley the covers are locked against opening, and when either cover is open the belt shifter is locked against movement to start the machine. As described in Specification 278,769, the feed roll 59 can 'swing about a pivot 119, and also about a bearing at the end of the pivot, the first movement'being resisted by a pair of spring plungers respectively provided with weak and strong springs and coming into action successively against an arm 125 secured to the bearing of the pivot. The second movement is resisted by a weak spring 149 and also by a strong string 169 threaded over a tube sliding on a rod 157 pivoted to an arm on the bearing. Adjustment of a head 165 provides variable play before the stronger spring comes into action. A stop 183 limits the yield due to the stronger spring. The feed roll has a spring finger in its end groove to lift the thin edge of a skived work-piece when a second cut is being made.
