462,037. Screw propellers. SCHWARZ GES., G. Sept. 3, 1935, No. 24540. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1934. [Class 114] A screw propeller of the kind having one blade arranged so that the blade is pivotally mounted on the shaft with its axis in a plane perpendicular to the shaft and transversely of the axis of the blade is provided with a counterweight on the opposite side of the propeller blade. A blade 1 is fitted on a cross axis 4 set in line with the propeller shaft axis 3 and the blade is continued and forms a counterweight 2 so that the masses on either side of the axis counterbalance. In one form the counterweight consists of a body 5, which is provided with arms 6 having pivot bolts 7 mounted therein. The bolts engage in arms 10 on a hub 9 which has a flange for bolting to the shaft flange. The blade 1 is fitted at its root into an opening in the counterweight 5 and has an arm 11 mounted between stops 12 fixed to the hub 9, these stops being formed of rubber. The counterweight may be provided with an additional sleeve which is adjustable so that final correction of balance can be made. In another form the pivot bolts are provided with spring held friction discs which provide a damping action on the pivotal movement. In addition the counterweight may carry radial arms and weighted portions 21 acting centrifugally to balance the blade these portions being connected by springs 22 to the supporting pivot arms 23. In another form, the blade is freely mounted in a counterweight 30. and carries beyond the weight a bevel wheel 35 which meshes with a bevel 29 on one of the driving arms 28. Relative pivotal movement of the blade to the shaft thus produces a rotational movement of the blade about its leading axis, to vary the pitch. In a modification, the blade is capable of being positioned along the line of the propeller axis. Specification 444,746 is referred to.
