Abstract

468,588. Screw propellers. FAIREY, C. R. Sept. 12, 1936, No. 24932. Addition to 457,823. [Class 114] An airscrew blade of the kind referred to in the parent Specification is modified in that the pistons used for moving the leading portion of the blade are placed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the blade whereby centrifugal force thereon provides for an automatic opening and closing of the gap between the two parts. The adjustable leading edge 11 is carried by rods having at the inner ends pistons 12-15 moving in cylinders 16-19. The two centre pistons are connected by a pipe line with a chamber 22 in the hub 23, there being within the chamber a spring 25 acting on a piston 24 so that as centrifugal force increases with increasing speed upon the pistons 13-14, these are enabled to move inward, the piston 24 moving to compress the spring 25. Admission of fluid to the cylinders is by way of passages having non-return valves which tend to move off their seats under centrifugal force, thus permitting the escape of fluid when the revolutions of the blade exceed a predetermined number.
