598,347. Variable pitch airscrews. RATIE, P. P., and RATIE, R.J. Feb. 20, 1940, No. 3214. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1939. [Class 114] In a variable-pitch airscrew having each blade secured in a metal socket 10 rotatably mounted in a corresponding radial drum 16 of the hub 18 of the airscrew, each socket is supported in the radial direction by a ball bearing 8 of large diameter which absorbs centrifugal forces and the bending forces exerted on the blade, and in the lateral direction by a conical ring 19 or other bearing member located at a radial dimension greater than that of the ball bearing 8 to absorb cutting stresses and, at low speeds, bending stresses. The ring 19 may be made of material based on synthetic resins and a washer or elastic tube 21 be interposed between the ring and a member 20 for locking the socket on the root of the blade to act as a predetermined tension as a brake and shock-absorber for the blade to avoid hammering on the members for controlling the incidence of the blades.
