Abstract

400,611. Screw propellers. SEPPELER, E., 4, Am Oberhafen, Neuk÷lln, Berlin. Jan. 21, 1932, No. 1893. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 22, 1933.] [Class 114.] An adjustable pitch screw propeller comprises blade spindles 3 mounted upon helical rows of balls 5 engaging radial spindles 2 fastened to a hub 1. The cage 6 is suitably geared between the parts 2, 3 by gearing 7, 8, 10 so that rotation is given to the cage during adjustment. Helical bevel segments 14 in the blade spindles mesh with a bevel wheel 13 mounted upon a casing 11 containing a spring tending to reduce the pitch of the blades to zero. The centrifugal force acting upon the mass of the blade tends to increase the pitch of the blades and in addition weights 15 are fitted to the surface of the blade spindles which cause a torque to aid the torque produced by the centrifugal force of the mass of the blade and compensate the disturbing torque arising from the distribution of the mass of the blade, or one resultant weight may be added carrying out both functions. In addition further torques may be provided by varying the axis of the blade 16, Fig. 4, which is pivoted at 17 to the blade spindle or by adjusting a disc 18.
