Abstract
382,560. Screw propellers. S O C. ANON. DES ATELIERS D'AVIATION L. BREGUET, 24, Rue Georges Bizet, Paris. April 22, 1932, No. 11647. Convention date, June 16, 1931. [Class 114.] Variable pitch propellers wherein the blades are mounted in sockets in a hollow boss have the blade roots extended beyond the propeller axis, each root being supported in two journal bearings one on each side of the axis, and between the ends of the blades is a thrust bearing whereby the centrifugal force on one blade is balanced by that on the other blade. Centrifugal torque is balanced by masses disposed in the roots acting thereon through rollers and inclined surfaces. The boss is' slidable on the shaft and coacts with a cam to vary the pitch in accordance with the ratio of the thrust to torque, this automatic control being subject to an over-riding manual control. A frame 4 is secured to the propeller shaft and within it is mounted the boss 5 with its sockets which are connected by lugs 6 and universally jointed rods 3 to the frame 4. The frame 4 carries rollers 8 engaging cam grooves on arms 7 secured to the root of each blade whereby the pitch is varied as the boss moves axially. Each blade 11 carries a sleeve 9 and a prolongation 13 secured thereto by a nut 16, the complete unit being mounted in an outer bearing 17 and an inner bearing 18. The inner ends of the prolongations 13 have a common thrust race, in which balls or rods 20 with spherical ends are employed, and at their outer ends have balance weights 29. Within the sleeve 9 is an annular mass free to move outwardly under centrifugal force. It is guided by rollers 21, 22 on a rod carried by the sleeve and also has inclined slots 27 which are engaged by rollers 23, 24 on the prolongation 13 of the opposite blade, whereby a corrective control of the centrifugal couple is imposed. For providing a limited over-riding control a lever 33 is linked through a lost-motion device 34 to a lever 32 connected by a sleeve 30 with the slidable boss 5.
