[Class 103 (ii)] In a vehicle lifeguard of the spring-loaded recoil type, the spring-loading means for the lifeguard or for each of its sections comprises a positioning spring which maintains the guard or section in its forward or normal position, and a recoil spring which is brought into action when the guard or guard section has been displaced a predetermined amount on meeting an obstruction. As shown, the guard comprises two inclined metal or other frames 1 covered with rubber &c. and suspended by hinged links 3 from a chassis member 12. The pistonrod 7 of a piston-and-cylinder spring mechanism is connected by a universal joint 8 to each frame, the cylinder 2 being pivoted at 14 to a fixed bracket 13. On meeting an obstruction the appropriate frame is forced rearwardly against a return spring 11 until the skirt 9 of a plunger 6 moving with the frame forces catches 4, against the action of springs 5, out of the cylinder 2. A recoil piston 15 loose on the rod 7 is thereby released and together with the plunger 6 and frame 1 is projected forwards by a compression spring 10 to throw the obstruction clear of the vehicle or to pick it up. The central portion of each frame may be removable to permit access to the adjacent wheel. The guard may be used in combination with lifeguard extensions pivotally and resiliently mounted on the forward ends of the mudguards, as described in Specification 401,881.
