Abstract
401,881. Mud and life guards for motor vehicles. SCANLON, J., 14, Armley Road. Leeds. Nov. 2, 1932, No. 30830. [Class 136 (i).] In a mudguard of the type having a movable front extension depending nearly to the ground and adapted to act as a lifeguard, the extension is pivotally and resiliently mounted on the forward end of the mudguard. An extension flap 1 constituting a lifeguard is pivoted at the forward end of the mudguard 2, and is maintained in the normal position by springs 5 anchored at one end to the mudguard 2 and provided at the other end with rollers 6 bearing on a plate 7 on the flap 1. When the lifeguard is moved back by an obstruction, rollers 8 come into contact with the wheel tyre, and the lifeguard is forced forwards again. The pivotal connections 3 are obliquely disposed, so that the lifeguard tends to throw obstructions outwards away from the track of the wheel. The spring 5 may be replaced or supplemented by hydraulic, pneumatic &c. devices.
