Abstract
434,615. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, HARRIS, N. L., and PRITCHARD, W. H., c /o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. April 16, 1934, No. 11416. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge tube 1 having a negative characteristic is connected in series with a stabilizing choke 6 to an A.C. supply, and has a thermionic electrode heated independently of the discharge by connecting its heating element 3 in series with a condenser 7 across the supply, at least during the starting period. The condenser 7 is used normally for power-factor correction and may be permanently connected to the heater 3, or a switch 8 may be employed to cut out the heater and to connect the condenser directly across the supply. The other electrode 2 may be heated by the discharge, or through a transformer, or through a circuit including a choke, condenser or resistance connected across the supply. In an alternative construction the stabilizing choke 6 is replaced by a condenser and the condenser 7 by a choke. Auxiliary electrodes may be provided for starting. Specification 434,614 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
