Abstract

434,443. Fire - fighting apparatus. CABAS, A. A. J., 68, George Street, Edinburgh. -(Stefani, M. ; 22, Via Scalinata, Trieste, Italy) March 5, 1934, No. 6916. [Class 47 (ii)] An apparatus for fighting fires in ships' holds and similar places comprises a sealed, double-walled, chamber a adapted to house a fireman. It is mounted in a frame b having a hook c whereby it can be lowered into position, and can be rotated about its vertical axis by gearing o, p, q. It has a double door d adapted to be opened from either side, and a double window n arranged above a ball-mounting m<1> for a hose - nozzle m. Supported by the frame b are two water - supplying pipes e, f connected to a source of supply by armoured hose, not shown. The pipe e supplies water to circulate between the double walls of the chamber, the water escaping by ports g and flowing over the exterior of the chamber. The pipe f supplies the nozzle m by way of a cock k and a turbine r which draws air into the chamber through a purifier. An escape valve s is provided for vitiated air, and drain valves t<1>, t<2> for draining the chamber and its waterjacket. In addition, an oxygen cylinder, telephone apparatus, electric battery for operating internal lighting and a searchlight, and gas masks, may be provided. On a passenger ship, a number of chambers may be provided, and may be wheeled and self-propelled.
