Abstract

Holders.-A gas holder 1 is fitted with a movable piston 4 dividing it into two compartments 2, 3, the upper compartment 2 being supplied with the inflammable gas to be stored and the lower compartment 3 being supplied with a heavy inert gas deficient in oxygen at a sufficient pressure to support the piston. The inflammable gas is forced by a booster 6 through a main 5 into the space 2 and is conducted to the distributing net' by a pipe 7. The inert gas may be ordinary flue or combustion gases which are forced from a chimney stack 8 to the space 3 by a constant pressure booster 9<a> after being cooled by a water spray. A valve 10 arranged in a bye-pass 10<a> between the pressure and suction sides of the booster 9<a> is operated through an adjustable link and rod mechanism 13, 14 by a bell 12 subject to the pressure in the main 5 so as to increase or decrease the supply of inert gas to the space 3 according to the consumption of inflammable gas and thus to maintain a constant pressure in the distributing net. The piston 4 is provided with an oil or tar seal 4a and is fitted with guide rollers 4<b> and self-supporting links 4<c>. The inert gas may be heated or mixed with heated gases so as to prevent the tar seal from thickening in cold weather.
