Mechanical stoking.-The fuel on a travelling grate is broken up or stirred by a reciprocating pipe b, c arranged transversely of the grate and provided with connections allowing for the circulation of a cooling-fluid. The upper part of the pipe is straight and the lower part is preferably zig-zag shape and arranged horizontally or vertically. The pipe is connected at one end to a block d adapted to slide in a recess in one wall of the furnace and at tHe other to a block d sliding in a guide e and operated by a crank f.
