Abstract

Holders.-A waterless gas-holder 1 is fitted with movable piston 4 dividing it into two compartments, the lower compartments 3 being supplied with the inflammable gas to be stored and the upper compartment 2 being supplied with an inert gas deficient in oxygen. The inert gas may he combustion gases, which are drawn from a chimney or stack 5 through a non-return valve 6 by a fan or booster 7 and after passing through a cooler 8 and, if desired, a washer or purifier enter the upper compartment through a flexible pipe 10. When the piston rises the excess inert gas in the compartment 2 escapes through a pipe 11, a water seal 12, and non-return valve 14 to the chimney 5. The temperature of the inert gas may be maintained sufficiently high to prevent thickening of the tar or oil in the piston seal 4<a>. Alternatively, inlet and outlet valves may be arranged to open and close automatically to admit or to allow the escape of the inert gas to the upper compartment, and, by adjusting the spring of the outlet valve, the pressure of the gas in the distributing network may be regulated.
