Abstract

The seats and other parts of the valves of internal-combustion engines are made of cast iron alloyed with 0,5-2 per cent of both aluminium and chromium, together with 2-3 per cent both of carbon and silicon. A preferred composition comprises 2,65 per cent of carbon, 2,5 per cent of silicon, 1,25 per cent of aluminium, and 1,75 per cent of chromium. Manganese, sulphur, and phosphorus may also be present in usual amounts for cast iron. The invention is particularly applicable to poppet valve seats of the type described in Specification 381,361, [Group XXVII].
