[Class 44] A hingeless lid is secured by a rotatable central handle operating the fastening means, the handle being afterwards turned down, whereupon an extension of the handle snaps over a dead-centre and exerts a clamping action to prevent accidental operation of the fastening means. Figs. 1, 3 and 4 show a lid for a square receptacle secured by a cruciform member 4 rotatable to engage its free ends under the turned-in lip 3 at the mouth of the receptacle 2. Member 4 is pivoted inside the lid 1, and a disc 5 outside, by a central pin or rivet 6, the parts 4, 5 being also connected by pins 7 passing through arcuate slots 12 in the lid. The handle 9 is pivoted in lugs bent up from disc 5 and its ends are bent to provide off-set parts 10, the ends of which bear against the lid and pass a dead-centre when the handle is turned down as in Fig. 3. In a modification for a cylindrical receptacle, disc 5 has pin and slot engagement with four equally spaced bolts, guided by pins on the lid engaging slots in the bolts, the bolts being moved outwards to engage under the receptacle lip by rotation of the handle. If desired, the bolts may be mounted above the lid.
