Abstract
432,831. Spraying molten materials. SCHORI, F., Wetzikon, Switzerland. Jan. 8, 1934, No. 17077. [Class 69 (iii)] [See also Group II] Apparatus for spraying metal or other fusible material of the kind in which the material is sucked into apparatus in pulverulent form in an air stream and fused and sprayed at a nozzle, comprises a handle 9 having passages 15 for the combustible mixture, 44 for the spraying air and 45 for the powder laden stream. The handle is formed in one with a part 1 bored out to receive the atomizing and spraying members. The handle contains a body 29 through the centre bore of which the comburent gas, e.g. oxygen, is led and emerges into a conical passage 16 while the combustible gas, e.g. acetylene, passes through peripheral grooves 32 leading to an annular passage 33 around the body 29 and thence to the diverging tube 16 which is held in place by a collar 27. The gases are separately regulated by needle valves 35, 38. The powder-laden stream is supplied through a passage 8 provided with a vent at 10 to an annular passage 7 and thence to the centre bore of the sprayer. Compressed air is supplied through a passage 44 to an annular chamber 12 and thence past passes to the atomizing nozzle and part to an ejector nozzle 3 regulated by a needle valve 4 by which the powder-laden stream is drawn from the passage 45 and blown through the central bore 20. As the powder emerges from the bore 20 it is fused by a flame formed at the annular space 27, which is preferably of elliptical form, and atomized by compressed air emerging through the annulus 19. While in operation the vent 10 is closed, but on opening air is drawn into the apparatus and powder no longer delivered. The powder may be contained in a vessel 46, Fig. 4, provided with a screen 47 and provided with a conical bottom into which fits a member 48 provided with a passage 49 for the powder leading to the junction of a regulable air inlet 50 and an outlet 53 connected to the passage 45. A small compressed air turbine 54 vibrates the hopper to assist in the screening of the powder and its feeding into the air stream.
