Abstract

1,140,511. Spray-producers. SOC. DES SOUDURES CASTOLIN S.A. 10 Jan., 1966, No. 1003/66. Heading B2F. A flame spray gun suitable for spraying metallic or plastics materials comprises a central discharge outlet 76 for an oxy-acetylene mixture in a nozzle 58, a conduit 32 connected to a compressed air supply so as to entrain powdered material from a hopper (38), fig. 3 (not shown) and deliver it to a discharge opening 74 surrounding the outlet 76, and separate supply conduits 24, 26 for the oxygen and the acetylene which are fed to a mixing chamber 64 via passages 54, 56 which are controlled by valves 60, 62 respectively. The flow of the fluidized powder is controlled by valves (34), (42) and by adjusting the position of the sleeve 65(a) which supports the outer portion of the nozzle and is screwed to the nozzle body 82. The opening 74 may be round, rectangular, or elliptical &c. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) depict alternative adjustable nozzles. A plurality of nozzles may be provided and a mixture of powdered materials from two or more hoppers may be sprayed, fig. 6 (not shown). A portion of the carrier gas surrounds the flame and the molten plastics material until it reaches the article to be coated and volatiles from the plastics form a protective gas shield between the flame and the particule stream. The flow of powder from its container may be assisted by the provision of a perforated tube connected to the compressed air supply and extending into the container, fig. 7 (not shown). The gas used to entrain the powder may be supplied through an auxiliary conduit so as to allow the supply therethrough to be varied while the gas supply at the nozzle is maintained constant. The entire apparatus may be mounted on wheels, fig. 1 (not shown) and may be automatically operated, the valves (34), (42) being operated electrically, 'for example. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,087,088.
