Abstract

707,228. Coating with metals. LONG, A., TAYLOR, F. N., and BLACKLOCK, A. June 18, 1951 [June 19, 1950], No. 15285/50. Class 82 (2) [Also in Group XXII] A method of applying metal to a surface for welding or coating it comprises supplying powdered metal and combustible gases to a nozzle whereby the powdered metal is simultaneously fused in the gas flame and combined with the fused surface to which the flame is applied, the powdered metal being drawn into the gas stream by an injector effect created by the passage of said gases to the nozzle. Apparatus according to the invention comprises a body 10 provided with nipples 11 and 12 for oxygen and acetylene respectively, valves 13 and 14 for controlling the gas mixture and a pipe 15 for receiving an adaptor 16. The pipe 15 is provided with a mixing nozzle 18 which is located within a conical chamber 19 in the adaptor 16. The narrow end of the chamber communicates with a pipe 22 leading to a nozzle 17. A hopper 30 containing powdered metal is supported by a discharge pipe 31 on a coupling member 32 having a central core 35 and nipples 34 and 33 are at each end. Extending into the core 35 is a tubular lining 36 mounted in a gland 37 and provided with a knurled head 38 whereby it can be turned in the member 32. The inner end of the lining 36 is provided with several different size'holes 39 capable of registering with the pipe 31 for regulating the powder feed from the hopper. The end 41 of the lining opens to the atmosphere and the inner end to the core 35 which communicates with a pipe 40 leading to the chamber 19 in the adaptor 16. In operation the lining 36 is adjusted. to bring the desired hole 39 into register with the pipe 31 from the hopper. The oxygen and acetylene valves 13 and 14 respectively are opened whereupon mixed oxy-acetylene gas issues from the nozzle 18 and creates a partial vacuum in the chamber 19 which draws air into the lining 36 and induces a flow of powdered metal from the hopper into the oxyacetylene gas stream which is ignited at the nozzle 17. The nozzle 17 is held within an inch of the surface to be welded or coated the metal powder and the surface being simultaneously fused and combined. A number of separately controlled hoppers may be provided for supplying a number of different metal powders so as to provide any desired mixture of metal powders in the gas stream. Specification 707,290 is referred to.
