[Class 46] In the purification of water, such as boiler feed water, by freeing it from hardness formers, the raw water is heated to about 100‹ C., and is caused to trickle down in fine distribution in a cylindrical vessel into which a gas consisting chiefly of carburetted hydrogen or nitrogen, or a mixture of both, is introduced in counter current from below, ammonia being previously added to the water or the gas. In the apparatus shown, the raw water enters the steam-jacketted vessel A through a sprinkler a and trickles over granulated iron ore, iron filings or porcelain rings c supported on perforated plates. The nitrogen &c., laden with ammonia is supplied from a vessel C through a pipe d. The treated water leaves through the pipe e and the gas charged with oxygen and excess ammonia passes through a condenser D which separates the ammonia and returns it to the vessel C. The gas then passes through a system E containing heated copper, alkaline pyrogallol, or sodium hydrosulphite to remove the free oxygen and finally enters one or other of the gasometers G, F. While one gasometer is being filled the other discharges into the vessel C, the positions being reversed by the cock m. The water in the vessel A may be heated by waste gases internally and the ammonia may be added directly to the raw water.
