Abstract

332,910. Stadtberger H³tte Akt.- Ges., and Feld, G. Feb. 26, 1929 Minerals oil, purifying.- Liquid hydrocarbons, e.g. toluene or benzene, are desulphurized by treatment, in the absence of steam or hydrogen, with finely divided copper prepared by precipitation from solutions of copper salts by iron or other base metal, and subsequently heating the precipitated metal above 100‹ C., without oxidation, in a reducing atmosphere if necessary, the said treatment with copper being preceded, if desired, by a partial removal of sulphur or sulphur compounds by known methods. The desulphurizer so prepared is used as such and is not deposited on a support. In a suitable apparatus the liquid hydrocarbon. which is preferably completely dehydrated, e.g. by calcium chloride, enters through an opening C at the base of a vertically disposed tube B and is forced up through the lower aperture of the trap E, surrounded by one or more heating coils 1, and through the desulphurizer supported on the said trap E. The desulphurized oil then rises through cooled tubes in a jacket K, and through a filter G which retains any particles of copper, and finally emerges at an aperture D. The desulphurizer is stirred by a device H. Fresh desulphurizer is introduced through a pipe A, and the exhausted material removed through a tube F. A plurality of such tubes B may be employed in counter current. In an example, 4 cubic metres of benzene are treated at 15‹ C. in 24. hours with 100 kgs. of the desulphurizer, during which period 4 batches of 6 kgs. of fresh desulphurizer are added, and similar quantities of the used material are removed. Specifications 3830/88, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], 203,354; and 287,577, [Class 55 (ii), Gas manufacture &c.], are referred to.
