Abstract

Purifying fats and fatty oils, and fatty acids.- Fatty acids and their glycerides, especially fish oils .and fats, are purified and deodorized by heating, admixture with a porous or powdered substance such as kieselguhr, and treatment with a non-oxidizing gas or a non-aqueous vapour such as petroleum ether or ethyl acetate. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process comprises a closed vessel 1 in which the material, cod oil for example, is heated by a gas burner 6. The oil mixed with hydrated silicate of alumina is fed in at an opening 5 and stirred mechanically, a perforated octagonal casing 16 assisting in the subdividing action. A current of non-oxidizing and non-flavouring gas, such as hydrogen, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, or a non-aqueous vapour is passed in through a perforated pipe 18. The oil is finally filtered or otherwise treated to remove the silicate and to recover any odoriferous mattew separated and not carried away by the gas or vapour. In modified apparatus, the subdivision of the oil is effected by spraying it from a rose in the cover of the vessel 1, while the gas or vapour enters by a slit in the side.
