Abstract

431,992. Control systems for consuming devices. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 16, 1934, No. 33051. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1933. [Class 38 (iv)] In arrangements in which a pair of gridcontrolled valves are used for controlling A.C. in a load circuit, a control potential from an external source is applied to the grid of only one of the valves, the other being normally maintained non-conductive and rendered conductive in response to current flow in the first valve. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which A.C. in a load circuit 11 coupled through a transformer 15 to an A.C. supply 10 is controlled by a pair of reversely connected valves 12, 13. When the valve 12 is rendered conductive by its control circuit 17, the valve 13 which is normally blocked by a bias battery 20 is also rendered conductive by impulses generated in a tertiary winding 19 on the transformer 15. In a modification, Fig. 2, the transformer 15 is dispensed with and the impulses necessary to overcome the effect of the bias battery 20 and render the valve 13 conductive when the valve 12 is rendered conductive by its external control circuit 17 are derived from a current transformer 22 in the load circuit.
