[Classes 1 (ii) and 90] In reacting nitrosyl chloride with air or oxygen at ordinary temperature to produce nitrogen peroxide and chlorine as described in the parent Specification, the steps of both the stage leading to the splitting - up of the nitrosyl chloride and the stage leading to the separation of the nitrogen peroxide from the resulting gaseous mixture are employed simultaneously. Preferably, an excess of oxygen is added initially or is maintained by the repeated addition of oxygen throughout the whole washing process. The washing medium may be brought into intimate contact with the products of the reaction in the zone of commencing decomposition, say by sprinkling or as a sprayed mist, for example by atomization by means of the oxygen or air being supplied to the reaction. Concentrated nitric acid may be used as the first washing medium, the nitrogen peroxide being recovered therefrom unaltered after saturation, and the nitric acid being cyclically returned to the process. The remainder of the nitrogen peroxide content of the gases may then be recovered as nitric acid in the manner described in the parent Specification. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 329,200, [Class 1 (ii)], and 398,187 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts).
