Abstract
252,928. Dicker, S. G. S., (Kudoh, K.). July 17, 1925. Sulphur dioxide. - A gas rich in sulphur dioxide is prepared by burning sulphur or sulphur containing materials such as pyrites in an atmosphere consisting of sulphur dioxide and at least 22 per cent of oxygen. Sulphur trioxide may also be present in the combustion supporting gas and when pyrites are not used as raw material the latter may be mixed with pyrites cinders in order to facilitate uniform combustion. After liquefaction of part of their sulphur dioxide content, the gaseous products may be diluted with oxygen and re-introduced into the furnace, the impurities being prevented from accumulating by substituting fresh sulphur dioxide for a part of the circulating gases. The gaseous product may be freed from sulphur trioxide when required by washing it with sulphuric acid.
