Abstract
1,271,884. Fe 2 O 3 , SO 2 and H 2 SO 4 from FeSO 4 7H 2 O. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 15 April, 1970 [19 April, 1969], No. 18035/70. Heading C1A. Fe 2 O 3 , SO 2 and H 2 SO 4 are produced by (1) heating FeSO 4 . 7H 2 O to remove 40-60% of the water of crystallization, (2) heating with gases from stage (3) to form FeSO 4 .H 2 O, (3) decomposing the FeSO 4 . H 2 O with pyrites in a hot O 2 - containing gas to form Fe 2 O 3 and gases containing SO 2 and SO 3 , and (4) contacting the gases from (2) with H 2 SO 4 in a molar solution : gas ratio of 5 : 1 to 2 : 1 to give H 2 SO 4 of at least 75% concn, and SO 2 gas. Stage (1) may be effected at above 70‹ C., e.g. 100‹ C., and stage (3) at 800‹ C. The gas after stage (2) may be at 320-380‹ C. and have a molar SO 2 : SO 3 ratio of 5 : 1 to 10 : 1. The hot gas for stage (3) may be produced by burning fuel oil in excess air. The H 2 SO 4 produced may be recirculated for contacting the gases.
