Abstract

<PICT:0430069/III/1> Relates to a destructive hydrogenation process in which a separator is arranged behind the reaction vessel for the separation of vapours and gases from liquid and solid components, and consists in flushing the walls of the separator with a liquid medium to prevent accumulation on the walls of the separator. The flushing liquid is distributed uniformly over the walls and other internal surfaces and may be produced by cooling the walls which are shaped as simply as possible. As shown, the mixture of products from the reaction vessel passes through a pipe 1 into a separator 2 the upper portion of which is surrounded by a cooling-coil 4 through which a cooling medium, e.g. hydrogen, flows at such a temperature as to form a thin film of liquid on the walls. Liquid is removed from the funnel-shaped lower end through a nozzle 7 and may be subjected to a further destructive hydrogenation. The liquid in the part 3 may be cooled and stirred by circulation a portion or may be cooled by a circulating cooling medium. British Specifications 216,150, 253,499, 317,996, and 321,473, [all in Class 32], and U.S.A. Specification 1,843,158 are referred to.
