Abstract
<PICT:0410342/III/1> Used lubricating and other oils are re-conditioned by passing steam upwards through a body of the oil while finely divided hot water mixed with a purifying reagent descends through the oil. Suitably, water in a jacketed vessel B is heated by burners N so that for 2 hours steam rises through oil on the water but below a sieve G, and the steam condenses on the closed lid J and falls back in drops through the oil. Tribasic sodium phosphate or other agent capable of coagulating the impurities liberated by the steam is then placed on the sieve G, and water from the jacket C is sprayed by a perforated pipe over the sieve to dissolve the phosphate. After about 1 hour the apparatus is allowed to cool; sediment is run off through a valve L, clean oil through a valve K. The jacket C extends round 3 sides of the vessel B, both the jacket and vessel are strengthened by swages F, and a false bottom H is provided in the vessel B.
