Abstract
812,706. Contacting gases with liquids. KOPPERS G.m.b.H., H. May 1, 1956 [May 2, 1955], No. 13398/56. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XIII] In a direct gas cooler cooling liquid flows in counter-current to the gas, is distributed over the entire cross-section of the cooler by rotating distributers 7 and is supplied to the cooler by two completely separate systems one of which transfers liquid from the bottom of the cooler through an indirect heat exchanger 15 to the middle region of the cooler while the other transfers liquid from the middle region through an indirect heat exchanger 24 to the upper part of the cooler. Liquid reaching the bottom of the cooler flows through a pipe 10 into a container 11 from which it is returned to the cooler by a pump 14 and a pipe 16. Excess liquid, such as that formed by condensation, may be removed by a pipe 13 and sprinkled on the container 11. The distributers 7, which may be discs, are rotated by a motor 6 to fling the liquid into contact with the wall 1 of the cooler where it is collected in channels 8 and returned by pipes 9 to the distributers. Liquid reaching the middle region of the cooler is withdrawn by a pipe 18 and returned by a pump 23 and a pipe 17 to the top of the cooler. If a gas containing naphthalene is to be cooled, a solvent such as tar oil, which may be extracted from the cooling water in a tar separator 19, may be supplied through a pipe 20. A hydrocarbon oil may be used in both of the coolant circulation systems if, for example, benzene hydrocarbons are to be scrubbed from coal distillation gases. The temperature of the gas, which enters the cooler at 2 and leaves at 3, may fall from 80‹ to 22‹ C. while the cooling liquid temperatures in the pipes 10, 16, 18 and 17 are 65‹, 50‹, 45‹ and 20‹C respectively, with temperatures rises from 25‹ to 45‹C and from 15‹ to 30‹C in the exchangers 15 and 24.
