Abstract
429,709. Blowpipe apparatus. CAMPBELL, L., 2828, Washington Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A., and BINGHAM & CO., Ltd., C., 34, Victoria Street, London. May 18, 1934, No. 15116. [Class 75 (i)] [See also Group XII] Blowpipe apparatus for removing metal by oxidation by using a stream of oxygen at relatively low velocity and pressure, in which in order to burn for heating purposes a combustible gas having a lower velocity of flame propagation than acetylene, the blowpipe is provided with a shield 5 extending a substantial distance beyond the exit for the gas and surrounding the base of the heating flame to protect and prevent extinction of the flame. The burner described is intended particularly for use with coke oven gas but town gas, hydrogen, petroleum and other gases may be used. A blowpipe tip 1, Fig. 2, for scarfing steel billets and for similar operations is formed with a relatively large central bore 2 for oxygen and a number of parallel smaller-passages 3 for the preheating gas admixed with oxygen. As far as possible the bores are smooth and do not contain constrictions or abrupt changes in cross section. The outer end of the tip is formed with a recess or counterbore 6 forming a shield for the protection of the base of the heating flame. In modified forms the passages 3 may be grouped to one side and the shield need not then include the passage 2. When coke oven gas is used it should be purified. A plant for this purpose, Fig. 3, comprises a water tank 20, and purifiers 21, 22 and 23 which may contain a mixture of iron filings, salt and shavings thoroughly moistened and spread on trays. From the purifiers the gas is forced by a compressor into a storage reservoir 28 and passes through a dehydrator 29 before use. Specification 412,946, [Group XXII], is referred to.
