Abstract
Hydrocarbons are decomposed, particularly to acetylene, by means of an inverted flame produced by the introduction of oxygen or an oxygen containing gas into an atmosphere of the entirely gaseous hydrocarbon in the absence of liquid or under the surface of the liquid hydrocarbon to be decomposed. The oxygen or oxygen containing gas is introduced through one or more jets into a vessel through which the hydrocarbon is caused to flow. Examples are given of the burning of oxygen or air in a stream of natural gas and of oxygen under the surface of gasoline. Kerosene, lubricating oils, &c. are treated in the same way. More acetylene is produced per unit of oxygen consumed when the jets are of small diameter and when arranged as a plurality of jets in a group in a single vessel.
